Description
The estate’s history dates back to antiquity. Traces of the medieval heart of Castiglion del Bosco can be found on the maps used by pilgrims in the second millennium, amid raiding and disputes. Still standing, the medieval-style castle dates to around 1100 AD. In 1967, Castiglion del Bosco was a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium, one of the first Italian wines to achieve DOC and DOCG status. The Consortium today boasts 240 members. In 2003, Castiglion del Bosco was restored to its former glory thanks to Massimo Ferragamo who, having fallen in love with the Capanna vineyard, bought the estate to fulfill his Tuscan dream. A renewal project started straightaway on both the architecture and the winemaking processes. The position of the vineyards at Castiglion del Bosco is particularly favorable: perfect exposition, good ventilation, low humidity and natural isolation due to the woodland that encircles the estate, the ideal barrier against vineyard parasites and affording protection for other vineyards in the Montalcino area. With its natural drainage, the rocky soil is perfect for making complex wines of fine elegance. The vineyards occupy 62 stunning hectares, at Castiglion del Bosco, the soil is worked to preserve and perfect each single vine. Our philosophy is that every intervention is tailored to each parcel of land. The natural isolation enjoyed by the vineyards protects the vines and considerably reduces the number of interventions required. Castiglion del Bosco has been organic-certified since 2016.

James Suckling – Score: 97 Points – Blueberries and cherries with hints of cedar and spice, as well as plenty of mixed dried flowers, including violets. Some graphite and stone, too. Medium-to full-bodied with racy tannins and a long, long finish. It’s linear and complete, with lovely elegance and structure. Try after 2024.
